Work with me
Are you having trouble reining in a misbehaving system, have you hit an architecture dead-end and don’t know how to proceed, or is your product stuck and you can’t get traction?
That’s the kind of problem I solve: untangling systems, finding a way forward when every alternative feels unattractive, and getting a product moving again.
I’m happiest working with Rust and Elixir, but the problems I solve aren’t tied to a language. For example, I’ve worked on custom compilers, old legacy code bases, and large database migrations.
Shorter engagement
A one-off engagement with a clear end. It might be a few sessions to bounce ideas and get unstuck, or a self-contained project I take on and hand back. We agree on the scope and price before I start, and there’s no commitment beyond that.
Retainer
Standing access without a fixed project. A few hours a month, mostly async: you send a question, a design, or a pull request, and I get back to you within a business day. If a call is faster, we schedule one. A fixed monthly fee for a set number of hours that don’t roll over.
Ongoing work
Deeper involvement where I stay on and push the project forward. I join for a longer stretch, taking on a subsystem, seeing an architecture change through, or giving a stalled project momentum. We agree on a set number of days per week, and revisit from there.
Remote, with occasional travel
I work remotely from the north of Sweden; that’s not something I’ll compromise on. Occasional travel is fine, and I keep to Swedish working hours.
Who am I
I’ve been programming for more than two decades and writing about it for almost as long, which says more about me than an about page would. For a sense of how I approach a problem, see how I designed a personal Pebble watchface, wrote a Tree-sitter grammar, built my own keyboard layout, or set up a Kubernetes homelab.
Since 2024 I consult through my own company, Arctic Bytes, based in Sweden.
Get in touch
A quick question is answered for free but anything beyond that is priced per engagement and agreed upon before we start.
Email mail@jonashietala.se with a sentence or two describing the problem and what you’re hoping for.
